Animal Advocates Pressure Canada to Ban Seal Hunting -- Again

Wednesday January 25, 2006
Clubbing and shooting thousands of baby fur seals used to be an annual event in Newfoundland. In the 1980s, Canada ended vessel-based seal hunting in response to public outrage and economic pressure from European governments, but the Canadian government recently reauthorized the winter seal hunts.

I cannot believe that a civilized country could do this to any kind of baby. You are backwards in your thinking and cruel. I am proud to be an american. This country would ban this and it would not return. It makes me sick when I think about it. I will never go to Canada on a vacation or buy any products….ever!!!!

I am a Labradorian and proud. Labrador is a a part of NL. I fully support the NL seal hunt( and not the culling of baby pups, okay) and feel that NL’s are being treated unfair, when they are constantly being criticized for their way of life. We Labradorians consume seal meat as a daily diet, and use the skins to make mitts and boots to keep us warm in the winter. We also send sell seal pelts to outside markets as a source of income for our families. It is done today on a very low scale, but it is still being done. I have no shame in it whatsoever!I feel that people who are against the seal hunt need to be more educated on our way of life. We have depended on what God put in our back yards to survive, which is what people do all over the world, whether it be cattle, sheep etc. Yes, the hunting of animals may have been more barbaric along time ago, but the culling of baby seals no longer exists in this part of the world. If you see pictures of this being done, it is very old pictures. The killing of animals for human comsumption, or clothing whether it be leather, crocodile skin, the slaughtering of chickens was more barbaric along time ago, which has now come a long way due to technology, as is the seal hunt. I think that it is ironic that you(groups against the seal hunt) single out popular, attractive people to rally around your cause, which is only reason why you single out the young seal pup because of it’s features, yet you do not do it for other species. Yes, seal hunting is still done, but the killing of seal pups is not done. You fail to listen to this because it is theses images that you feed your campaign on. I realize that my comments will be unpopular to some people, but this is exactly how I feel.
