The Truth is Out

Friday June 2, 2006
An Inconvenient Truth, the critically acclaimed documentary about global warming starring Al Gore and a slide projector, opens in wide release today. During its initial limited run, which began on May 24, the film has created a tremendous amount of discussion about the dangers of global warming, the urgency of the issue, and whether Al Gore's sudden status as an unexpected movie star could become his opening bid for another run for the White House in 2008 (he says he's not interested).

The film even helped to inspire a series of television ads designed to discredit global warming and those who voice concerns about the issue, ads that were later denounced by a scientist whose research was misinterpreted in what he called a “deliberate effort to confuse and mislead the public.”

If you haven't yet had a chance to see the film, I strongly recommend that you make the effort and invite a few friends to join you. Not only is An Inconvenient Truth important for the science it presents and the questions it answers, but it is also sure to be viewed as a bellwether of public interest in global warming. The more people who see the film, the more national and community leaders will realize that people really do care about the problem of global warming, and maybe they will start getting serious about finding solutions.

If you don't see An Inconvenient Truth in your local listings yet, you can get help finding a theater at the film's official Web site.
