Should Batteries Be Tossed or Recycled?

Batteries power many of the tools, appliances and gadgets we use every day, but what should you do with those batteries when they wear out? Can used batteries be safely discarded along with other household trash, or should they be recycled to prevent mercury and other toxic substances from harming the environment?
