Most people don’t realize how inefficient standard water heaters are. The insulation deteriorates rapidly, so the energy specs on the label are only accurate for a yr or two after installation. Just putting an external layer of insulation on the tank helps grealy (cheap & easy to do).
Problem with solar: as the article states, 60% of the country has inadequate sunlight. So what are the other 40% waiting for? You can build and install one yourself for about $100. http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles/hackleman65.html
