Public Transportation: Fast Track to Fewer Emissions and Energy Independence

Friday March 21, 2008
With gasoline prices heading for more than $4 per gallon in the United States this summer, and already higher than that in many other countries, people worldwide are looking for ways to save money while reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.

One of the easiest ways to pocket some extra green while also living green is to use public transportation as often as possible. Using public transportation instead of driving alone in your car is good for the planet and good for your budget--using public transportation can save many families as much as they spend on food in a year. It could also be a critical component in America's drive to achieve energy independence. Learn more about the benefits of public transportation.

The average American will spend 2 years of his/her life sitting still in traffic (with the motor running). The oil and auto industry profits from, but does not pay for, dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Here in Chicago, politics, graft, corruption and waste plague the CTA. Salaries are way too high for the job performed so the CTA is under constant financial stress and fare hikes chase passengers away. Public transportation should be free, making its use impossible to pass up.
OTOH-I object to those who Satanize the oil companies. They only give us what we’re willing to pay for. We are the Satans. We need to buy more scooters or ride the Ten Toe Express more often.

I live in Florida, in Charlotte County. We have NO public transportation here. There is in the counties to the north and to the south, but not here. I would LOVE to use public transportation. Used it a lot when I lived in MI.
