Five Ways to Help Save the Planet in 30 Minutes or Less

Tuesday April 15, 2008
Every day you hear more and more about the environmental problems mankind is facing. You wonder what you can do to help, and how you'll ever find the time.

Take heart. You may not be able to reduce global warming, end pollution and save endangered species single-handedly, but by choosing to live an earth-friendly lifestyle you can do a lot every day to help achieve those goals. And it won't require you to give up your job or ignore your family.

To get you started, here are five simple things you can do—in 30 minutes or less—to help protect the environment and save this little blue ball we call home.

Just don’t use compact flourescent bulbs ANYWHERE around children. The mercury in the bulbs is highly toxic - mercury exposure may be one of the triggers for autism. I replaced all my bulbs, had one burn out so badly it scorched the base, filling a room with mercury-contaminated vapor. I didn’t realize this at the time, became ill, and finally called Poison Control, where I was told I had indeed been exposed to mercury but probably “not enough to worry about”. Broken bulbs have sometimes been referred to Hazmat teams for clean-up, and even on the government website, they list a bunch of precautions to take when cleaning up a broken bulb, including not vaccuming up the pieces, leaving the area for 15 minutes prior to cleanup, and so on. These are not the benign, green answer we have been led to believe, especially around kids and pregnant women. See the link for “Mercury Leaks Found as New Bulbs Break”
