Why is Chlorine Added to Tap Water?

Unfortunately, chlorine also may cause other serious health problems. Learn how you can benefit from the chlorine in your drinking water while avoiding its potentially harmful effects.

Thanks for this great entry on chlorine, its benefits and its risks. When speaking on cancer prevention I am often asked about the risk of chlorine in drinking water, and it is a good opportunity to discuss this as well. On the up side, chlorine eliminates H.pylori from our drinking water. H.pylori is a bacteria considered to be the leading cause of stomach cancer worldwide. Some experts believe that the water chlorination process is responsible for the decline of stomach cancer in the US. On the other side of the equation, the Silent Spring study released in May points to chlorinated water as a known breast cancer carcinogen in animals. Using a water filter can eliminate this risk. Thanks for your tip as well about leaving water in the fridge for 24 hours for those who do not consider a filter in their budget for now!
