How Safe is Tap Water?
Monday August 11, 2008
Bottled water companies try to make the case that tap water is not safe to drink, urging consumers to use their products instead and arguing that bottled water is safer and healthier than what you get from the tap. Seemingly in support of that idea, various studies have confirmed that tap water in many communities contains hundreds of chemical contaminants. So, how safe is tap water? The next time you get thirsty for a drink of water, should you reach for a bottle or head for the kitchen faucet?Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Most “bottled water” IS just tap water. It’s pretty rare for municipal supplies to cause any health problems. (Like I always say, longevity is increasing- how bad can things be?) There was that episode in Milwaukee about 20 yrs ago when Cryptosporidium found its way into the supply and caused problems with immunocompromised folks. That’s how infrequent problems are.
Check the label. Drinking water is usually tap water that has been purified and sealed. Spring water may come from a spring instead of a well, but they don’t filter it as well because that would mean filtering out what makes that spring special. Read the label for yourselves, before you spend a small fortune on water that spells “naive” backwards.
