Green Roofs Can Help Keep Your Summer Cool

From Larry West, About.com GuideJune 1, 2009

With the weather heating up and many of us trapped in the city for most of the summer, the idea of finding a cool and pleasant oasis among the mean streets sounds pretty appealing. If you’re not finding the retreat you’re seeking at ground level, look skyward.

Green roofs are taking root in cities all over America—from Chicago to Portland—where they are reducing air pollution, capturing carbon dioxide, and cooling the heat island effect. Green roofs are also making cities more livable by transforming unused rooftop spaces into elevated parks and gardens where city dwellers can take a break from the rat race.
