Fear of Pesticides Drive Parents to Switch to Organic Baby Food

Thursday November 3, 2005
Many parents are switching to organic baby food owing to a new study, which concluded that babies who eat conventional baby food have much higher levels of pesticides in their bodies than those who eat organic varieties.

The Associated Press reports that a study of children whose diets were changed from regular to organic baby food found their pesticide levels plunged almost immediately. The amount of pesticide detected in the children's bodies remained imperceptible until their diets were switched back to conventional food.

The U.S. government considers conventional non-organic foods safe, and food industry trade groups agree, but one fact seems indisputable. Since last year, sales of organic baby food have increased nearly 18 percent, double the overall growth of organic food sales, according to the marketing information company ACNielsen. Clearly, in the marketplace, parental concerns are outweighing industry and government reassurances.
